About Us

Meet the team here at highland Rural

First and foremost, we are a group of friends who each have a background in rural business. Some of the directors are former colleagues and there are many similarities about the stages of our professional lives. We are drawn together by a common goal; to service the growing need for rural property owners and occupiers to have access to practical and professional advice, at a reasonable price. In Dingwall & Highland Marts, we have a partner who shares many of our values and ambitions. We are focussed on the Highlands & Islands, though are happy to work across Scotland, and we want to give a personal service where the directors are always available and want to know and understand you and your business. By being located at the Mart, we want our office and our team to be open and accessible to you.

We are always sorry to hear examples of people who made decisions because they didn’t think they would bother their agent or that the agent might not be interested in something; please let us be the judge of that. If you have any sense of needing advice, some direction or even just to bounce an idea off someone else, please get in touch on an absolutely no-obligation basis, we will listen to you and tell you if we can help, and if so, how.

The farm and estate management sector is changing. Margins are squeezed and for a lot of people, things cannot just continue in line with tradition anymore. Many sectors are in decline, and the bureaucratic and administrative burden on rural businesses increases seemingly without end, but there remain huge opportunities. These opportunities can be harder to see when you are very close to them, and sometimes a conversation or review with a fresh pair of eyes can see things that might be overlooked. Land use is changing and there are opportunities and external demands that can be converted into valuable income streams.

Mary Bowman

MRICS
A passion to understand all things rural led Mary to work in farming, field sports and equestrian jobs across six different counties in northern Scotland, before briefly returning to her homeland of Edinburgh to study a Rural Business Management degree. Her rounded experience of the sector gives her a strong advantage in the management of a wide range of rural properties, though she has also worked in roles specifically focused on renewables and natural capital since training as a rural surveyor.
